Student Art Show Celebrates MacArthur Park at Charles White Elementary

From MacArthur Park, with Love opens May 21 at Charles White Elementary School Gallery, featuring works by over 100 students from the Charles White Visual Arts LACMA Magnet. The exhibition, developed with LACMA's Education department, explores the neighborhood's past, present, and future. First graders created a collaborative diptych of an aerial park view; the Charles White Art Club produced drawings of Bonito's Swap Meet, now a homeless services nonprofit; second graders painted local birds on amate paper. The school, named after artist Charles White (1918–1979), opened in 2004 on the former Otis College campus. LACMA has run exhibitions and programs there since 2007, starting with SWAP: Mark Bradford and Ruben Ochoa. The magnet program began in 2017. The gallery is unique in the U.S. for museum-quality student shows. The opening is May 21, 2–5 pm; the exhibition runs Saturdays May 23–August 1, 12–4 pm, free with drop-in workshops.
