Stijn Dries Converts Abandoned Zaandam Paper Mill into Maker Village for 200 Creatives

Stijn Dries has repurposed De Hoop, a derelict paper factory in Zaandam, Netherlands, into an internal village housing two hundred creative entrepreneurs. The industrial sheds now form a collective engine for production and discovery, with a layout featuring winding alleys, wide squares, and secluded corners that mimic a historic town center. Tenants designed and constructed their own facade openings, allowing individual workshop personalities to influence common areas. Modest industrial materials and attention to proportion provide a calm backdrop for creative clutter. The project fosters immediate community through participatory construction, forging interpersonal bonds and shared stewardship. Walking through De Hoop offers a sensory experience filled with scents of sawdust and metal, shifting acoustics, and visual stimuli like prototypes and reclaimed timber. This adaptive reuse reflects a global shift toward decentralized, artist-led spaces prioritizing process over polish, similar to interventions like Kaloki Nyamai Studio in Nairobi and SOLO CSV gallery in Madrid. The building's vertical complexity is connected by custom steel and timber stairs, with common squares providing gathering areas under natural northern light. The exterior, located in an industrial zone of metal boxes, gives little hint of the kinetic energy inside, where boundaries between workspace and public square are intentionally blurred.
