Steve McQueen's Solo Exhibition at De Pont Museum Features New Installation Atlas and Recent Acquisitions

Steve McQueen's solo exhibition at De Pont Museum in Tilburg presents three recent works and a new installation, Atlas, created in 2026. The show explores themes of racism, violence, and memory through personal and collective history. Sunshine State (2022), recently acquired by the museum, is a monumental video installation featuring distorted clips from The Jazz Singer (1927) and McQueen's narration of his father's racist encounter in Florida. Untitled (2025) immerses visitors in darkness with sounds of a punching bag, while Bounty (2024) comprises 47 photographs of Grenada's flora, hinting at colonial history. Atlas shifts perspective to the cosmos, displaying data from the European Space Agency on four monitors. McQueen, born in 1969, recently received the Erasmus Prize for depicting human vulnerability.
