Steve McQueen's Grenfell Film Installation to be Presented in Liverpool

Tate Liverpool and the Bluecoat are partnering to present Steve McQueen's film installation titled Grenfell. The artwork will be on view at the Bluecoat from May 16 to June 21. This presentation is part of a national tour organized by Tate that began in 2025. The installation was created by the London-born artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen in December 2017. It serves as a direct artistic response to the fire at Grenfell Tower on June 14, 2017, a tragedy that resulted in 72 fatalities. McQueen filmed the tower before it was concealed behind protective barriers, intending to create a lasting visual document to ensure the event is remembered. Following the fire, a Government Inquiry was established and conducted in two phases. The findings from both phases have been released, but their recommendations have not yet been implemented, raising concerns that a comparable disaster could occur again. A criminal investigation into the fire remains active. Steve McQueen has expressed his motivation for creating the work.
