Steve Lacy's 'Oh Yeah?' Explores Heartbreak and Queer Romance

Steve Lacy released his third LP 'Oh Yeah?' earlier this month, a deeply humane record that marries early-nineties R&B with modern disaffection. The album follows his 2022 hit 'Bad Habit,' which spent 35 weeks on the Hot 100, including three at No. 1, and was the first single to top five Billboard genre charts. Lacy, 24 at the time of the hit, grew up in Compton and was previously known as guitarist for the Internet, a psych-R&B band from Odd Future. 'Oh Yeah?' explores heartbreak from a relationship six years ago, queer romance, and personal underdevelopment. Lacy describes the album as 'post-nut clarity,' focusing on vulnerability and the aftermath of loss. He produced the album and continues his idiosyncratic style mixing bedroom melancholy with broadband corruption. Lacy has worked with Kendrick Lamar, Solange, Mac Miller, and Vampire Weekend, and made the beat for Lamar's 'PRIDE.' using an iPhone 6. He is planning a tour including a show in the Philippines, where his father was from.
