Stella McCartney's Highland clifftop residence receives planning approval

Highland Council has granted planning permission for a clifftop residence proposed by fashion designer Stella McCartney and her husband Alasdhair Willis. The approval came during a Wednesday meeting of the council's south planning applications committee, following consideration of amended plans for the property located at Roshven on Loch Ailort, west of Fort William. The project faced significant opposition with over 65 objections citing concerns about the building's scale, architectural design, and potential effects on the surrounding landscape and wildlife. A spokesperson for the couple described the planned structure as an energy-efficient family residence that would feature stone walls and a turf roof to minimize visual impact. The site occupies part of a previously abandoned development from the early 2000s on Commando Rock, a rocky headland with historical military training use. Council approval included specific conditions requiring mitigation measures for external lighting due to the elevated location, proper sewage and drainage management away from the cliff edge, and obtaining a license from NatureScot because of otter presence in the area. Councillor Thomas MacLennan noted the current design would integrate more harmoniously with the landscape compared to earlier approved plans. The couple emphasized their commitment to sustainability and community engagement, stating this would serve as their permanent family home rather than a vacation property.
