State Library of Victoria Abandons Restructure Plan Following Public Outcry and Writer Protests

The State Library of Victoria has withdrawn a controversial reorganization proposal after significant public backlash. The plan would have eliminated 39 positions and reduced reference librarians from 25 to 10 while removing many public computers. More than 220 prominent writers, scholars, and researchers signed an open letter opposing the changes, including musician Nick Cave, authors Geraldine Brooks, JM Coetzee, Thomas Keneally, Alexis Wright, and Helen Garner. Garner criticized the library's direction, calling it 'party central' and warning the restructure would 'bring disgrace on the name of our city.' A CPSU Victoria petition gathered over 4,600 signatures, while a separate public petition reached nearly 10,000 signatories. Library management announced the decision on Friday morning following consultation feedback, stating they would 'refine our approach' while maintaining focus on strengthening services and modernizing operations. Journalist Gideon Haigh, who led the open letter campaign, argued the dispute demonstrated the need for renewal of the library's board and management. The reversal occurred just before a planned rally supporting library staff and Victoria's public institutions, which union representatives confirmed would still proceed. Management had previously defended the proposal as responding to surging demand and changing engagement patterns, insisting their commitment to the people of Victoria remained strong.
