Stacy Martin on 'Sense and Sensibility' and Directing Debut 'Amaretti'

publication · 2026-10-15

In Georgia Oakley's adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Stacy Martin takes on the role of Fanny Ferrars, following her initial appearance in Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac. The French actress, now splitting her time between Los Angeles and London, has frequently collaborated with Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold on films like The Childhood of a Leader, Vox Lux, The Brutalist, and The Testament of Ann Lee. Oakley’s second feature, after her Venice People's Choice-winning Blue Jean (2022), offers a tranquil interpretation of the widely adapted novel, emphasizing women's daily aspirations. While filming, Martin also worked on her directorial debut, the short Amaretti, which premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and explores elder abuse, inspired by her grandmother's story. After losing her 35mm camera shortly before production, she switched to Super 16, a change she attributes to Oakley's determination. For editing insights, she consulted Corbet, Fastvold, and Lukas Dhont, drawing inspiration from Agnès Varda, Gena Rowlands, and Andrea Riseborough. Focus Features will distribute the film, which will also be available on Netflix.
