Spencer Lowell's Debut Monograph 'Futures Past' Explores Technology and Humanity

publication · 2026-10-02

Spencer Lowell's first monograph, 'Futures Past,' compiles 57 color photographs across nearly 100 pages, examining the intersection of technological progress and humanity. The images span diverse subjects: aerial views of New York City, an automated cow milking machine, a fire tornado in a Montana lab, an auditory testing room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and a person bowing to a robotic priest in Kyoto. Other scenes include nuclear reactors, Mars rovers, pleasure robots, and supercomputers. Lowell, born in Los Angeles and based in New York City, has over 20 years of experience and has collaborated with Apple, Bloomberg, National Geographic, Google, Meta, NASA, OpenAI, and TIME. He describes the book as a definitive collection of his finest images to date. An opening essay is contributed by climate activist and Fulbright Award-winning writer Daniel Sherrell, who notes that the technologies are the true protagonists, captured in worlds they have built that both serve and exclude humans. Lowell argues that technology does not oppose nature but continues it. Published by KGP Monolith, the book ships this month. The standard edition costs $75; special editions with limited-edition prints are $250, and a package with four signed prints is $1,000. Preorders are available now. The book was designed by Luminosity Lab.
