Spearhead Announces Advanced Timber Manufacturing Facility in British Columbia Designed by Leckie Studio

Canadian fabricator Spearhead has revealed plans for a new $60 million mass timber manufacturing facility in Nelson, British Columbia. The facility will be constructed adjacent to the company's existing operations base and is scheduled to become operational by 2027. Leckie Studio serves as the architect of record for the project, with Fast + Epp as structural engineers and HR Pacific as general contractor. The facility will feature specialized glulam manufacturing capabilities and advanced CNC machining technology, including a Hundegger K2i CNC machine. It will produce complex timber structures using locally sourced softwoods, mixed-species, and hardwoods, creating wood members up to 80 feet in length in various configurations. The development aligns with Canada's Build Canada Homes program and Look West strategy, which aims to triple wood sourcing from British Columbia over the next decade. Canadian Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth Ravi Kahlon noted the facility's alignment with government economic policies. The project emerges during a period of shifting construction practices and international trade dynamics affecting the timber industry.
