Spain Grants Monument Protection to 1862 Trafalgar Lighthouse in Cádiz
The Faro de Trafalgar, located in Caños de Meca, Barbate (Cádiz), has been granted Bien de Interés Cultural status by Spain's Council of Ministers. This designation, which was proposed by Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun and initiated in June 2025, represents the highest level of protection under Law 16/1985 concerning Spanish Historical Heritage. Designed by engineer Eduardo Saavedra y Moragas (1829–1912) along with his students Rafael Navarro, Antonio de Palacio, and Manuel García, the lighthouse was constructed as part of the 1847 Plan General de Alumbrado Marítimo and was first illuminated on 15 July 1862. Standing over 35 meters tall, it overlooks the site of the 1805 naval battle. The designation ensures the preservation of its historical significance while permitting necessary maintenance and enhancements. It was included in the Catálogo de faros con valor patrimonial de España in 2017.
