Soviet-Era Illustrations of The Hobbit from 1976 Reprint
A 1976 Soviet-era edition of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit featured illustrations that diverged sharply from Tolkien’s own drawings. The Russian translation, which the author encountered as a child, was accompanied by images that were more angular, friendlier, and almost cartoonish—stylistically traditional and distinct from Tolkien’s original artwork. The cover shows a grinning Bilbo Baggins holding a gem, while an interior illustration depicts Gandalf visiting Bilbo. Another scene portrays the three trolls arguing over their eating arrangements, with Bilbo hiding nearby. Gollum, also known as Sméagol, appears paddling a raft in mountain depths, and Bilbo is shown in Smaug’s lair fulfilling his role as a burglar. The author recalls that his own copy lacked pictures entirely, but a friend’s edition contained these typical Russian-style illustrations. The post notes that an earlier version appeared on the site in 2014. Ilia Blinderman, a Montreal-based culture and science writer, contributed the piece. Related content includes J.R.R. Tolkien’s own drawings and paintings, Maurice Sendak’s short-lived attempt to illustrate The Hobbit, a long-lost Soviet adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien reading from The Hobbit in 1952, and his personal book cover designs for The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
