Sony Lytia L910 LOFIC Sensor Promises 16.6 Stops Dynamic Range

Sony has announced its first LOFIC image sensor, the Lytia L910, a 50-megapixel Type 1/1.28 sensor that achieves 100 dB dynamic range (approximately 16.6 stops) with a single exposure. LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) preserves excess photovoltaic charge in a parallel circuit, expanding light-gathering capacity and reducing highlight blowout and noise in dark areas. Mass production begins summer 2026, with flagship smartphones expected later this year. The technology was previously featured in the Xiaomi 17 Ultra's Light Fusion 1050L sensor, developed with OmniVision and Xiaomi. Sony claims the L910 provides imaging that resembles human vision, especially in high-contrast scenes like night views with LED lights. While currently limited to smartphones, Sony may explore LOFIC architecture for larger sensors.
