Sony FX5 Camera: New 16.6MP Sensor, Open Gate, Internal RAW Recording

Sony announced the FX5 cinema camera, featuring a new 16.6-megapixel stacked full-frame Exmor RS sensor and Bionz XR2 processor. The camera introduces Open Gate (3:2) recording, internal X-OCN RAW, three base ISO (800, 4000, 12800), and Dual Gain for up to 16 stops of dynamic range. It records 5Kp60 and 4.5Kp120. The FX5 adopts the compact FX3 form factor with a detachable OLED EVF (3.68M dots, 2500-nit), a 3.5-inch 16:9 articulating display, and Venice-inspired UI. It has dual UHS-II SD/CFexpress Type A slots, WiFi 6GHz, and uses the NPSA100 battery (130 min recording). No built-in ND filter. Firmware 2.0 (August 2027) will add 4Kp240 X-OCN and Open Gate XAVC-I. Available mid-August for $4,898; kit with XLR handle $5,498. Preorders start now.
