Sohrab Hura's 'A Winter Summer' at Experimenter, Mumbai

Sohrab Hura's solo exhibition 'A Winter Summer' at Experimenter in Colaba, Mumbai, runs from April 24 to July 19, 2026. The show brings together series spanning two decades, including 'Snow' (2015–19) shot in Kashmir, 'The Song of Sparrows in a Hundred Days of Summer' (2013–17) in Savariyapani, Madhya Pradesh, the video installation 'Pati' (2010, 2020) in Pati, Madhya Pradesh, and 'Land of a Thousand Struggles' (2005–6) from North Indian rural belts like Jharkhand. Hura's work resists sensationalist imagery of conflict, instead depicting everyday life and political realities. 'Snow' captures Kashmiri winter phases—Chillai Bachha, Chillai Khurd, Chillai Kalan—focusing on mundane moments rather than troops or violence. 'Land of a Thousand Struggles' documents the Right to Food movement and the push for NREGA, with captions in Hura's handwriting. 'Pati', his first video work, originated from a misread email in 2010 and features his narration. Hura emphasizes long-term relationships with subjects and the importance of time, noting that 'The Song of Sparrows' took eight years of familiarity with Savariyapani. The exhibition uses analogue televisions and digital screens, with densely packed walls of photographs. Hura told STIR that seasons are a 'doorway' for audiences, not the primary meaning, and that he is more interested in people.
