Social Housing Project in Mallorca Combines Local Materials with Sustainable Design

A new architectural project in Santa Margalida, Mallorca, involves the construction of a building containing 10 social housing units alongside 10 multipurpose spaces. The development is led by architects Javier Gavín, Siddartha Rodrigo, Juan Moreno, and the firm DATAAE, with completion scheduled for 2025. The design emphasizes environmental sustainability and integration with the local landscape through the use of regionally sourced materials. The exterior structure employs sandstone known as marés, quarried nearby, creating a durable facade that blends with the surroundings. Interior construction utilizes prefabricated wooden panels for horizontal elements and load-bearing walls made from locally produced brick, which helps control costs. The project team includes specialists in various engineering and consultancy areas such as structural design, environmental sustainability, acoustics, and cost management. This initiative addresses housing needs in a small northern Mallorcan town while prioritizing ecological building practices and economic feasibility.
