SoBA Designs Kindergarten Block in Kunshan Amid Complex Urban Context

The Kindergarten Block project, designed by architecture firm SoBA, is a new educational facility located in Kunshan, Jiangsu province. Curated by Han Shuang, the project covers an area of 8,600 square meters on a 1.01-hectare site and is planned as a 21-classroom kindergarten. The building is situated east of Hongqi Road and north of Zhenchuan Road. The architectural design responds to a challenging urban environment, with high-rise residential towers to the north and additional housing developments planned to the east. To the south, municipal infrastructure including a 110 kV substation, waste transfer station, and emergency medical center creates visual and environmental disruptions. The project team, led by architects Wang Ruo and Tang Haiyin, addressed both spatial and psychological challenges presented by the surrounding context, particularly the enclosure effect from tall residential buildings. Construction documentation was handled by Delin United Engineering Design Co., Ltd., with Jiangsu Wuhuan Construction Group Co., Ltd. serving as contractor. The client is the Yushan Town People's Government of Kunshan. Photography for the project was completed by Wen Studio. The kindergarten is scheduled for completion in 2025.
