SoBA Architects Creates Kunshan Sports Park Inspired by Kunqu Opera Costumes
SoBA Architects has designed the Huachiao Vibrant Sports Park in Kunshan, China. The 6,000-square-meter facility in Suzhou's Kunshan district includes basketball courts, a skatepark, table tennis tables, a pavilion, and a children's playground. The park's flowing forms and color scheme draw inspiration from the 'water sleeves' used in traditional Kunqu opera costumes, which originated in the region. The skatepark features a sculptural white ribbon made of ultra-high-performance concrete, while other areas use blue, orange, and pink colors. The design aims to create an inclusive community space with native plantings and accessibility features.
