Smithsonian Under Political Attack: Citizen Historians Fight Back

The Trump administration is exerting political influence on the Smithsonian Institution, alleging it has succumbed to 'ideological capture' and promotes an 'anti-white agenda.' An executive order issued in March 2025 warned of funding reductions unless 'improper ideology' was eliminated. A report released on July 4th, titled 'Saving America's Story,' accused the National Museum of American History (N.M.A.H.) of being swayed by radical activists. During a congressional hearing, Director Anthea Hartig faced criticism from Republicans, including Representative Nancy Mace, regarding the museum's displays. Meanwhile, the grassroots organization Citizen Historians for the Smithsonian, spearheaded by James Millward, rallied over 700 volunteers to oppose political meddling. Historian David W. Blight denounced the report, receiving backing from Senator Lisa Murkowski and Second Lady Usha Vance. Notably, the 1976 Bicentennial exhibition encountered no such disputes, despite addressing similar topics.
