Smithsonian Taíno exhibition travels to Mattatuck Museum

From July 11 to October 4, 2026, the Afro Caribbean Cultural Center, along with the Mattatuck Museum, will host "Caribbean Indigenous Resistance / Resistencia indígena del Caribe — Taíno Vive!" This exhibit will be offered in English, Spanish, and Hiwatahia, created in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the National Museum of the American Indian, and the National Museum of the American Latino. It focuses on the history of the Taíno, the Indigenous peoples of the northern Caribbean, and highlights how their descendants are revitalizing their cultural identity today. The exhibition emphasizes the Taíno legacy and the growing movement to reclaim Indigenous identity in the Caribbean.
