Slovenian Architects Reconstruct Swiss Alpine Cabin as Landscape-Integrated Observatory

Slovenian architectural practice Guča architektúry has completed the reconstruction of a Swiss Alpine cabin in Ingenbohl, Canton of Schwyz. The project transformed a structurally unsound log and stone ruin into a contemporary modular dwelling that serves as a quiet observatory of the surrounding peaks. Located on a steep slope overlooking Brunnen and Lake Uri, adjacent to the Stockflue climbing cliff, the design navigated rigorous heritage constraints and ecological considerations within a protected bird habitat. The architects maintained the original footprint and height while adhering to strict local building codes, including limits on glazing ratios. This forced creative approaches to lighting, resulting in an introverted facade toward public hiking trails that opens dramatically toward the forest canopy. Due to extreme topography and lack of road access, structural components including Cross-Laminated Timber panels were prefabricated off-site and transported via helicopter. The building features a reinforced concrete base anchoring a timber frame, with exterior materials including untreated Corten steel and exposed rebar chosen to weather naturally with the landscape. The interior employs an open-plan layout with a central concrete sculpture housing a fireplace and supporting a minimalist staircase, while sliding walls allow flexible space definition. Partially recessed sleeping areas use walk-on skylights to bring in natural light. The site includes three distinct outdoor zones: a central entry area, a south-facing social terrace with a concrete fireplace, and a standalone sauna building mirroring the main cabin's geometry. The largest glass apertures face the steepest, most private part of the plot, creating immersive views of tree canopies and mountain mists. The project represents a contemporary interpretation of Alpine vernacular architecture that prioritizes ecological sensitivity and material honesty.
