Six Major Art and Architecture Projects Scheduled to Open Across Japan in 2026

Several significant art and architecture developments are planned for Japan in 2026, spanning multiple cities. In Fukuoka, architect Sou Fujimoto will unveil The Gateway Park 'HAKATA MEIJI' near Hakata Station in spring 2026, featuring elevated pathways and gardens alongside a commercial building. Kyoto will see the Imperial Hotel Kyoto open on March 5, 2026, in the Gion district after a $100 million restoration of the Yasaka Kaikan by Obayashi Corporation, with interiors by New Material Research Laboratory, a firm co-founded by artist Hiroshi Sugimoto and architect Tomoyuki Sakakida. Tokyo will host two openings on March 28, 2026: MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives, designed by Kengo Kuma with a spiral exterior near Takanawa Gateway Station, focusing on seasonal exhibitions blending art and science; and Starbucks Cafe & Art Gallery Yanaka Gotenzaka, a two-story wooden structure by HAGISO in Tokyo's Yanaka area, which will showcase local artists. In Nara, the historic Nara Prison, built in 1908, will reopen as a hotel operated by Hoshinoya Resorts on April 27, 2026, following its closure in 2017. Additionally, Yurakucho Park is set to launch in Tokyo in the latter half of 2026, developed by Mitsubishi Estate on the site of former buildings, featuring Japa Valley, a cultural hub produced by Pharrell Williams and Nigo in collaboration with Not A Hotel, with a focus on art and commerce inspired by California's Napa Valley.
