Sigma 50-120mm f/2.8 Contemporary Review: A Compact Telephoto for APS-C

publication · 2026-09-12

Sigma has released the 50-120mm f/2.8 Contemporary lens, a compact telephoto zoom designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras, priced at $799. The lens offers an equivalent full-frame focal range of 75-180mm and weighs just 13.8 ounces (390 grams), with 55mm filter threads. It features a constant f/2.8 aperture, optical stabilization, and an aperture ring, though it lacks an AF/MF switch and an aperture ring lock. In testing on a Fujifilm X-E5, the lens delivered fast and accurate autofocus via a linear motor, effective stabilization, and pleasant bokeh with clean specular highlights. However, veiled flare was easily triggered by bright light sources, and corner sharpness at wider apertures showed some softness, improving when stopped down. The lens is available for Sony E, Fujifilm X, and Canon RF mounts. It complements Sigma's existing 10-18mm f/2.8 and 18-50mm f/2.8 lenses, forming a lightweight f/2.8 trio. The review concludes that the lens fills a gap in the APS-C market, offering a versatile and affordable alternative to larger, more expensive full-frame 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses or the Fujifilm 50-140mm f/2.8.
