Short-Form Videos Impair Memory Retention, Study Finds
A recent study in Communications Psychology shows that watching brief, fragmented videos makes it harder to remember information compared to longer, continuous videos. Conducted by Meiting Wei and Guang-Heng Dong from Yunnan Normal University, the research involved three experiments with college students. In the first, 180 participants either viewed a ten-minute documentary or several short clips with the same content. Those who watched the clips did worse on quizzes immediately and the next day. A second experiment with 185 students, who were told to focus, still showed that short clips resulted in more forgetting. The final study included fMRI scans of 59 participants, revealing that continuous video enhanced brain activity in memory-related areas, while short videos disrupted it. The authors note that outcomes might vary for kids or older adults.
