Sharon Butler's 'Green Wall 3' featured in American Abstract Artists' 90th anniversary exhibition at Art Cake
Sharon Butler's artwork 'Green Wall 3' (2010-2024) will be showcased in 'Abstract by Definition: An Index,' commemorating the 90th anniversary of the American Abstract Artists at Art Cake in Brooklyn. The exhibition, curated by Saul Ostrow, features 90 artists and is scheduled from April 11 to May 30, 2026. Butler's piece is part of her 'Green Paintings' series, influenced by Edvard Munch's 'Jealousy Paintings' and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1774 work 'The Sorrows of Young Werther,' delving into themes of jealousy, echoing Shakespeare's 'green-eyed monster' from Othello. On May 9, she will join a panel with Ostrow and Tom McGlynn. Additionally, a limited edition of Goethe's novel will be available at the gallery on April 25. The exhibition opens on April 11, featuring artists like Alice Adams and Liz Ainslie. Butler created the painting at her Dumbo studio located at 20 Jay Street. The Two Coats of Paint Residency Program will welcome Dale Emmart from April 13-17, with an open studio on April 15 in Long Island City.
