Shantell Martin's Textile Collaboration with Momentum Group Featured at Cooper Hewitt

British artist Shantell Martin collaborated with Momentum Group to create a series of four textiles in 2016, translating her signature drawing style into fabric designs. Two of these works, 'Places Spaces Faces' and 'Well Well Well,' were acquired by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and featured in its 2017 exhibition 'Making | Breaking: New Arrivals,' where they were used as upholstery for seating in the museum's conservatory. Martin, known for her improvisational black-and-white illustrations and performance background as a VJ in Tokyo, approached this project as a departure from her typically spontaneous practice, viewing it as an opportunity to expand her work into new dimensions. The textiles reflect her themes of urban environments and positive messaging, with the Cooper Hewitt's curatorial director noting their humorous and optimistic qualities. This collaboration represents Martin's exploration of reproducible media while maintaining her focus on intuitive creation and self-expression.
