Seven Nations Debut at 61st Venice Biennale Amid Geopolitical Tensions

The 61st International Art Exhibition in Venice marks the inaugural participation of seven nations, including El Salvador's independent pavilion. Geopolitical tensions are highlighted by the absence of South Africa and the presence of Israel, Russia, and the U.S. Vietnam showcases 'Vietnam: Art in the Global Flow,' featuring ten artists who delve into lacquer traditions. Somalia introduces 'SADDEXLEEY,' with contributions from Ayan Farah, Asmaa Jama, and Gouled Ahmed. Guinea presents 'Leaves of the Same Root,' while Equatorial Guinea displays 'FOREST UNDERGROWTH,' and Sierra Leone features 'First Light.' Nauru also makes its first appearance with an ecological exhibit. Qatar's temporary pavilion, curated by Tom Eccles and Ruba Katrib, offers a glimpse of a future permanent pavilion, while El Salvador highlights sculptural research by Beatriz Cortez.
