Settlement Preserves Institute of Museum and Library Services After Legal Challenge

A settlement signed on 9 April between the American Library Association, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, and the Trump administration ensures the Institute of Museum and Library Services can continue its operations. This agreement reverses staff reductions and grant terminations that followed an Executive Order last April targeting federal bureaucracy, which had placed all IMLS staff on administrative leave. The ALA and AFSCME, representing cultural workers, filed a lawsuit to prevent the agency's dismantling. In early May, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order that blocked further dissolution efforts and halted mass layoffs scheduled for later that month. The settlement guarantees the IMLS will maintain its grant programs, research initiatives, and support services for U.S. libraries and museums. ALA President Sam Helmick stated that the administration's actions last year triggered nationwide library cuts to hours, staff, and essential services like after-school programs and jobseeker support. The resolution safeguards these community resources across the country.
