Sesc Opens New Cultural Center in São Paulo's Parque Dom Pedro II in June

São Paulo will inaugurate a new Sesc cultural center in Parque Dom Pedro II in June 2026. This facility represents the 26th Sesc unit in greater São Paulo and is notable for being the first developed as part of an urban planning initiative. The project, designed by architects Fernanda Barbara and Fabio Valentim of Una Barbara e Valentim, aims to address urban fragmentation in a historically challenging area of the city's center. The site is near the former São Vito building, a large residential complex demolished in 2011, and the Tamanduateí River. The architectural design emphasizes urban connectivity with four equal entrances, translucent facades, rooftop gardens, and a lack of fencing. Key programmatic elements include a theater, indoor pool, sports facilities, a library, workshops, and a large dining area. The building incorporates sustainable features such as natural ventilation, rainwater collection, and capillary irrigation for gardens, earning it LEED certification and the 2025 Holcim Foundation award for sustainable construction in Latin America. Construction began over five years ago during the pandemic and involved more than 33 specialized projects. The center will prioritize public transport access and includes a bicycle parking facility, with no public parking due to the area's flood-prone history. The inaugural exhibition, 'As Sete Voltas do Tamanduateí,' curated by Veronica Stigger and Eduardo Sterzi, will explore the historical and artistic significance of the local river. The theater is designed as a multifunctional space with movable seating. Daily attendance is estimated at around 5,000 people. The project seeks to counteract decades of urban degradation linked to intensive highway-focused policies from the 1968-1974 military dictatorship period, which disrupted connections between landmarks like Mercado Municipal and the Sé district.
