Sergio Furnari's Charlie Kirk Monument Draws Online Trolls

Sculptor Sergio Furnari from New York City is encountering significant online criticism regarding his upcoming memorial for the late right-wing podcaster Charlie Kirk, scheduled to be unveiled in Times Square on September 10. His Instagram has been inundated with crude humor, threats of vandalism, and backlash against Kirk's political views. Despite this, Furnari remains resolute, claiming that such threats inspire him to produce more sculptures. He has initiated a crowdfunding effort aiming for $150,000, having raised approximately $3,483 so far. While he does not identify as a "MAGA guy" and disagrees with Kirk's immigration policies, he appreciates Kirk's dedication to "open dialogue" and has spoken out against the media's treatment of Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk. The statue features Kirk seated with a microphone, dressed in a "FREEDOM" crewneck. Kirk was tragically killed by a sniper during a Turning Point USA debate at Utah Valley University. Previously, the New College of Florida had announced intentions for a statue of Kirk. Furnari has yet to secure permits from the Times Square Alliance and faced permit issues in 2021 when his red heart sculpture was removed from Central Park.
