September Auction Highlights: Giacometti, Hiroshige, Marr Guitar and More
The fall auction season opened with Asia Week in New York, sales in London and Paris, and a series of standout results. At Sotheby's Paris, Diego Giacometti's 1980 console table Homage to Böcklin, a tribute to symbolist painter Arnold Böcklin, sold for approximately $4.56 million during the Rochas Collection auction. Christie's New York hosted "Hiroshige: Colors of the Four Seasons | The Alan Medaugh Collection," assembled over 50 years; all 181 lots found buyers, totaling $6,991,616. Hiroshige's Plum Estate, Kameido brought $358,400 against a $60,000–100,000 estimate. In London, Christie's sold Johnny Marr's 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo for about $474,544, far above its $79,000–105,900 estimate; Marr bought the guitar in 1983 and later lent it to Noel Gallagher for Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe. Sotheby's Hong Kong offered a pair of Cartier Tutti Frutti ruby, emerald and sapphire earrings, a design lineage begun by Jacques Cartier's 1911 trip to India and later merged with Art Deco ideas; the earrings fetched roughly $1 million, about ten times their estimate. Christie's New York sold a Huanghuali daybed, previously shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in an exhibition of 16th- and 17th-century Chinese furniture, for $3.17 million against a $120,000–180,000 estimate. At Phillips New York, a Verner Panton prototype "UFO" lamp, offered with no reserve, realized $61,920. The article will be updated through the end of September, 2026.
