Sébastien Léon’s “Inca City” Blends Sci-Fi and Craft at Ralph Pucci

French-born, NYC-based artist and designer Sébastien Léon presents “Inca City,” an exhibition at Ralph Pucci New York that merges function with experimental materials. Developed during a residency in Ralph Pucci’s sculpture studio, the collection includes the Codex sofa made from hand-painted cardboard coated in fiberglass, Plasterglass Chairs that mimic stretched leather, and the Mirage collection of glass that looks like marble. The Ouroboros collection features three handwoven Nepalese rugs with cushions, created with Carini Lang carpets, each taking four months to produce. Léon, who approaches design as sculpture, spent two years developing the works. The exhibition is set to an otherworldly soundscape and includes serpentine Sapera sculptures of welded chain and blown glass, and Memento cast-metal mirrors. Ralph Pucci noted Léon’s original voice and material experimentation. The show follows two years of collaboration between Léon and Ralph Pucci International, which began with representation of his silver glass tabletops.
