Seattle Raccoon Jimothy Becomes Mascot for Misfits and Disability Pride

Jimothy, a raccoon with short spine syndrome, has become an unofficial mascot in Seattle after going viral. The raccoon, who lives in the Ballard neighborhood, has a rare congenital condition that compresses his spine, giving him a round, pom-pom-like appearance. Despite his condition, Jimothy thrives as a wild animal, climbing fences and scavenging. His popularity has inspired fan art, murals, and even an honorary doctorate. Local artist Ryan Henry Ward auctioned a painting of Jimothy for $6,543.21, donating proceeds to the Ballard Food Bank, with Amazon, Alaska Air, and T-Mobile matching the donation. Seattle City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck will proclaim this summer "Jimothy Summer" on July 26. Jimothy's rise coincides with Disability Pride Month, making him a symbol for inclusivity and disability rights, especially as Section 504 faces legal challenges. Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife urges the public to admire Jimothy from a distance to keep him wild.
