Researchers have made a groundbreaking discovery by observing seafloor spreading in real time at the Southeast Indian Ridge. Instruments, including underwater microphones, sensors, acoustic beacons, and a pressure gauge, were deployed on the seafloor in February 2024. The event began on April 26, 2024, marked by a series of earthquakes. Over the next six days, the seafloor descended approximately 13 feet, with tectonic plates separating by at least 6.5 feet—significantly more than the anticipated centimeters. Around 5.7 billion cubic feet of lava surfaced over 16 days, creating new crust. A study published in Nature on July 8 indicates that most tectonic movements at mid-ocean ridges occur without seismic activity. Co-author Jean-Yves Royer emphasized the fortunate timing of the instruments, which prevented data loss.
