ScanLAB Projects Presents Time-Based Digital Installation at Desert Botanical Garden

London-based creative studio ScanLAB Projects has created a large-scale digital installation titled 'FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse' at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. The exhibition features five digital works that visualize the slow growth and changes in the Sonoran Desert environment using data collected through daily 3D scanning sessions over a year from October 2023 to October 2024. The project employs LiDAR technology to capture millions of data points, revealing natural processes that occur too gradually for human perception. Studio co-founders Matt Shaw and William Trossell collaborated with local experts including Dr. Kim McCue and Raul Puente-Martinez, and worked with dedicated photographers who conducted daily scanning expeditions. The installation includes both outdoor displays and an immersive indoor gallery environment with multiple screens. The artists describe their process as archaeological, sifting through extensive data to find narratives about water use, agriculture, and environmental resilience. The exhibition runs through May 10, 2024, and aims to encourage visitors to contemplate time, fragility, and the desert ecosystem. ScanLAB Projects emphasizes that while they interpret and present the data, they do not manipulate the raw information collected.
