Santiago Yahuarcani's First Brazilian Exhibition at MASP Explores Uitoto Cosmology

The Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) is showcasing 'El principio del conocimiento,' marking the inaugural Brazilian exhibition of Santiago Yahuarcani, who was born in 1960 in Pebas, Peru. Curated by Amanda Carneiro, the exhibition comprises 35 paintings divided into five thematic sections: Pintando sonidos, Tiempo de lágrimas sangrientas, Mundos espirituales, Plantas sagradas, and Guardianes del Amazonas, all of which embody the Uitoto perspective. The title draws from Yahuarcani's 2019 piece featuring an anthropomorphized coca leaf. Notable artworks include 'Lugar caliente' (2023), addressing the Putumayo genocide (1879–1912), and 'Ni vergüenza ya tienen los pucachos' (2020). This exhibition will be on display until August 2, 2026, and is part of MASP's 'Historias Latinoamericanas' initiative, with plans to travel to Museo Universitario del Chopo.
