Sanou Oumar and Matt Paweski explore utility and healing in dual exhibition at Gordon Robichaux

Gordon Robichaux presents 'Forma di Utilità / Shape of Utility,' featuring drawings by Sanou Oumar and sculptures with functional design by Matt Paweski. This marks the third exhibition at the gallery for both artists, with Oumar's first since receiving U.S. asylum in 2025. The show's title draws from Giovanni Gariboldi's philosophy, developed with Gio Ponti in 1940s Italy, which sought austere elegance through industrial ceramics. Paweski's process involves drawing, cutting, bending, assembling, disassembling, painting, and riveting to create objects that serve as devices for expansion and introspection. Oumar works with colored pens, paper, and paperboard to produce intricate drawings that reflect architectural forms and a desire for home, influenced by his childhood in Burkina Faso. His practice echoes Indian mandalas and the work of Hilma af Klint and Emma Kunz, using geometric abstraction for spiritual and restorative purposes. The exhibition runs until April 26, 2026, in New York.
