Sandy Liang's 'Dressing Up' Book Chronicles a Decade of Memories

Designer Sandy Liang, known for her downtown aesthetic, has collaborated with Rizzoli to publish her first book, 'Dressing Up,' a hand-annotated diary of her past decade. The project began when Rizzoli approached Liang, who admitted she would never have proposed the idea herself due to the permanence of print. Liang, who has never maintained an official archive, found the process both daunting and nostalgic. The book features a scrapbook-like layout, drawing from thousands of iPhone photos that blend backstage shots, e-commerce images, and personal milestones such as her engagement, wedding, and the birth of her child. Each image is paired with first-person footnotes, covering everything from her first Monchhichi doll to the inspiration behind her ballet flats. The lo-fi format evokes girlish nostalgia, a theme present in her collections and intensified by her role as a mother. The book includes an interview conducted by W Youth Magazine's Ava Niuri and an introductory letter from actress Greta Lee, a close friend. Liang describes the book as a time capsule, and it serves as both a brand chronicle and an ode to memory. The publication marks the closing of a twelve-year chapter, though Liang did request the inclusion of a few more favorite collections before print.
