San Antonio Museum of Art's 'Canvas to Clay' Pairs O'Keeffe with Southwest and Mexican Pottery

The San Antonio Museum of Art presents 'Canvas to Clay: Georgia O'Keeffe & Maria Martinez to Mata Ortiz & Tonalá' in its Steves Gallery through October 4, 2026. This exhibition connects four paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe with pottery by Maria Martinez and Julian Martinez, alongside ceramic works from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, and Tonalá, Jalisco. O'Keeffe's 1959 painting 'It Was Yellow and Pink II,' on loan from The Cleveland Museum of Art, exemplifies her aerial landscapes that abstract natural forms. The Martinez collaboration produced black-on-black pottery like the 'Double Spouted Wedding Vessel with Butterflies,' now in The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's collection. From Mata Ortiz, Hector Gallegos's 2002 'Pot with Lid' displays geometric precision, while Tonalá jars feature elaborate floral painting. The show highlights how 20th-century ceramicists like Juan Quezada revived Indigenous techniques in Mata Ortiz. Tonalá pottery's historical significance is noted by its appearance in Diego Velázquez's 'Las Meninas.' Installation places large Tonalá jars before windows framing the Urrutia Arch in SAMA's courtyard. The exhibition emphasizes slow looking and craftsmanship, contrasting with contemporary mass production.
