Sally Abé Opens Teal Restaurant in Hackney with Focus on British Ingredients and Feminist Design

Chef Sally Abé has launched her first independent restaurant, Teal, in Hackney, London. The establishment emphasizes British seasonal ingredients with a commitment to sustainability, named after the game bird rather than a color. Abé, known for her roles at high-profile kitchens like The Pem and The Harwood Arms, collaborated with her sister, Alice Webster, on the design, which features feminist themes with decor referencing women's rights movements. The interior blends elements of a French bistro with British touches, including bentwood chairs, mustard-yellow banquettes, and vintage stools. Webster incorporated colors from the teal bird into the palette using items from HK Living, Alice Palmer, and Pooky lighting. The menu offers nostalgic British dishes with refined execution, such as Cornish mussels with Jersey Royals and deer with pickled walnuts. Abé works alongside head chef Abbie Hendren, continuing her support for women in the culinary field. Additionally, proceeds from a Victorian-inspired ice cream dessert are donated to Hackney Foodbank. The restaurant aims for a relaxed, local atmosphere while serving high-quality food.
