Saekdong House: Renovating a 1968 Seoul Residence with Courtyard and Timber

Architects Isak Chung and Jinpyo Hong have renovated a single-story house from 1968 located in Yeonhui-dong, Seoul, resulting in the Saekdong House. The design honors the original home's elevated levels, enhancing both natural light and views while providing a gradual entrance to a private area. An air-raid shelter, common in older local residences, was incorporated into the renovation. The previous living room was eliminated to establish an open courtyard, which significantly improved light and airflow. The space freed up was utilized for a new annex. The building received reinforcement through timber framing and features a jade-green FRP eave. The name 'Saekdong' symbolizes a traditional Korean patchwork method, harmonizing old and new elements.
