Sabine Marcelis Creates Hybrid Carpet-Sculpture for cc-tapis

Designer Sabine Marcelis has developed a new work titled 'Roll' for the rug manufacturer cc-tapis, transforming a traditional domestic item into a hybrid object that functions as both carpet and seating. The project originated from the simple act of unrolling a rug, reimagining it as a three-dimensional presence that redefines spatial arrangements. Roll incorporates a structural arm made from wood and resin, allowing the typically floor-bound textile to lift and fold, creating surfaces for leaning or sitting. The hand-knotted wool carpet maintains its textile nature while gaining new functionality, positioned between soft furnishing and sculptural form. Material contrast is central to the design, pairing warm, tactile wool with translucent resin—a material frequently used in Marcelis's practice—to create dialogue between soft and rigid elements. The limited edition piece was presented during Mexico Art Week 2026 at the Valner Residence, a modernist 1970s structure designed by architect Agustín Hernández. In this setting, the folded textile forms interacted with brutalist architecture, emphasizing Marcelis's intention to make rugs active spatial elements rather than purely decorative items. The collaboration between Marcelis and cc-tapis proposes a new approach to textile inhabitation, where carpets become architectural presences capable of shaping environments and encouraging interaction. This project continues Marcelis's ongoing investigation of material transformation, turning everyday domestic objects into unexpected hybrid creations.
