Ryo Yamada's Fabric Installation in Edinburgh Explores Climate Change Through Spatial Experience

Japanese artist Ryo Yamada has created a site-specific installation titled 'Perception Corridor' at Scot ART Gallery within St Margaret's House in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Completed in March 2026, the work transforms the gallery's narrow space into an immersive environment that examines perception, movement, and environmental awareness. The installation consists of a 40-meter-long corridor constructed from seventy suspended non-woven fabric panels arranged one meter apart. As visitors walk through, the corridor gradually narrows from two meters at the entrance to sixty centimeters at the end, altering the sense of distance and depth. Each fabric panel is weighted with sewn yellow yarn at its base, allowing subtle movement with air currents while reflecting light softly. At the corridor's terminus, a mirrored panel inscribed with phrases about environmental change confronts visitors with their reflection. The installation's dimensions reference climate data: 40 meters approximates daily glacial retreat distance, while the 40-second walk duration corresponds to global ice loss of nearly one million tons. Through bodily movement and spatial manipulation, Yamada translates abstract environmental statistics into personal sensory experiences, encouraging reconsideration of ecological transformation through direct engagement rather than data alone.
