Ryan Cullen Exhibition at KIN Brussels Explores Originality and Recognition in Contemporary Art

This concept connects to William Gaddis's 1955 novel 'The Recognitions,' which features a painter creating technically perfect works in the style of Old Masters that circulate successfully despite being considered forgeries due to attribution issues. The exhibition presents contradictions between apocalyptic thinking and historical conclusions, with titles and works referencing various knowledge systems including Economics, Politics, Psychology, and History. Images function as symbolic currency within global systems of history, capital, and ideology. Cullen's practice navigates six conceptual poles: image and system, reference and construction, history and repetition. The central question posed is not what constitutes an image, but rather from where images receive their meaning. Ryan Cullen was born in 1992 and maintains his practice in Brussels. He completed studies at Cooper Union in New York and the Städelschule in Frankfurt. His work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally.
