Russian Activist Ilya Remeslo Arrested After Anti-Putin Manifesto

Ilya Remeslo, a Russian activist previously linked to the Kremlin's crackdown on Alexei Navalny, was detained the day after he forecasted that Putin would find himself in handcuffs. He is charged with disseminating false information about the Russian military under new censorship regulations enacted following Moscow's military actions in Ukraine, which could result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years. His attorney, Sergei Badamshin, announced via social media that Remeslo was being taken to Moscow for a court appearance. Earlier this year, Remeslo publicly opposed the Kremlin, releasing a manifesto demanding a trial for Putin. Shortly thereafter, he was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility, echoing practices from the Soviet era. Remeslo had previously testified against Navalny, contributing to his imprisonment. Navalny passed away in an Arctic penal colony in 2024.
