Rublev's Trinity Icon Warped After Climate Control Failure at Russian Monastery

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-14

The Trinity icon, created by Andrei Rublev in the early 15th century, is experiencing warping due to a failure in its climate control system. Under the directives of President Vladimir Putin, the icon was relocated to the Russian Orthodox Church in 2023 and is currently housed at the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra monastery near Moscow. On 15 September, Ksenia Chernega announced that a replica has been installed as a temporary substitute for the original. Restoration teams are actively assessing its condition, particularly after humidity levels soared to 80%, posing a risk to the artwork, as reported by Ekho on 12 September. Although the case was repaired, it proved inadequate once more. Earlier this year, Putin also transferred two additional historic pieces to the church, which is backed by Patriarch Kirill.

Key facts

  • Andrei Rublev's early 15th-century Trinity icon is reportedly warping after its climate control capsule broke down at the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra monastery near Moscow.
  • The icon was transferred from the State Tretyakov Gallery to the Russian Orthodox Church in 2023 under President Vladimir Putin's orders and remains state property.
  • Ksenia Chernega of the Moscow Patriarchate told RBC on 15 September that a copy has temporarily replaced the icon in its capsule; RBC reported the copy was installed in August.
  • The Tretyakov's press service told Tass on 14 September that the icon is in the Lavra's restoration workshops and staff are checking its condition.
  • Ekho, a platform run by exiled journalists, first reported the threat on 12 September, citing anonymous sources who said humidity inside the case spiked to about 80% two months ago.
  • Elena Pronicheva, then Tretyakov director, had told Ria Novosti the temperature should be within 1 degree of 19C and relative humidity 50–55%.
  • A German specialist determined the case had malfunctioned, repaired it, but it broke again hours after his departure; international relations complexities prevent his return.
  • The icon's three wood pieces are warping from humidity, threatening the painting, according to Ekho; arts writer Sofia Bagdasarova said a photo showing a crack and oozing restoration glue is genuine.
