Royal Academy Explores Riviera's Role in Birth of Modern Art

The Royal Academy of Arts in London will host 'Peindre la Riviera de Monet à Matisse' from October 2, 2026, to January 31, 2027. The exhibition traces how the French Mediterranean coastline became a laboratory for modern art from the 1870s onward. Featuring 120 works including paintings, sculptures, travel posters, and films, it chronicles the influx of artists drawn by the southern light. Monet and Renoir painted in Antibes and Cagnes, while Matisse, Derain, and Braque developed Fauvism in Collioure and Saint-Tropez. The show highlights the liberation of color—blue skies, violet shadows, dazzling sea—that propelled art into modernity. The 'Train Bleu' and the myth of the coast as a creative hub are also explored.
