Roy Lichtenstein's 1977 Sculpture Featured in Miami Pop Art Exhibition

Roy Lichtenstein's sculpture 'Picture and Pitcher' from 1977 is currently on display as part of a Pop Art exhibition at The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse in Miami. The exhibition runs until April 4, 2026. This work represents a significant three-dimensional extension of Lichtenstein's Pop Art approach, translating his characteristic graphic style into freestanding form. Created in 1977 with fabrication completed the following year, the piece stands approximately 95-96 inches tall and is executed in painted bronze, with some prototype versions in painted aluminum. It belongs to a series of about twenty sculptures produced by the artist between 1977 and 1980. These works adapt classic art historical subjects, particularly still life motifs, into Lichtenstein's distinctive visual language, which includes bold outlines, Ben-Day dots, primary colors, and simplified shapes that reference commercial printing techniques. The sculpture is part of the holdings of The Margulies Collection. The exhibition highlights this period of Lichtenstein's career, showcasing his move beyond painting into sculptural practice while maintaining the core aesthetic principles of his earlier work.
