Rome's CArMe Project Advances: Via dei Fori Imperiali Redesign and Antiquarium del Celio Opening

cultural-heritage · 2026-10-02

The CArMe initiative, spearheaded by Walter Tocci for Roma Capitale, is set to revamp the central archaeological zone stretching from Terme di Caracalla to Fori di Traiano, with an anticipated finish between 2025 and 2027. This project is backed by €200 million from PNRR, Giubileo, along with state and municipal resources, and will include a pedestrian ring. In 2024, Labics emerged victorious in a competition to redesign Via dei Fori Imperiali. Recent developments feature improved paving and access for both pedestrians and cyclists. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri recently inaugurated the Museo delle Terme di Traiano, commending the initiative. More than 80 interventions are planned, including restorations and new urban links. The Antiquarium del Celio is set to open by late November 2026, supported by €10 million from PNRR, serving as a cultural hub.
