Rockbund Art Museum Exhibition Explores Afro-Asian Revolutionary Histories Through Feminist Lens

The exhibition 'The Great Camouflage' is currently on view at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai through April 26, 2026. Co-curated by X Zhu-Nowell and Kandis Williams, the show examines 20th-century Afro-Asian alliances and revolutionary movements, with a particular focus on Black feminist thought. Originally conceived to explore racial capitalism and Marxist influences in anti-imperialist struggles, the exhibition evolved to highlight women activists and artists whose contributions were often overshadowed by their male counterparts. Featured figures include Shirley Du Bois, Eslanda Robeson, Amy Ashwood Garvey, Suzanne Césaire, and Grace Lee Boggs. The presentation includes contemporary artworks that engage with revolutionary histories from feminist perspectives, with pieces by Pope.L, Tuan Andrew Nguyen, Onyeka Igwe, Cauleen Smith, Wang Tuo, Hao Jingban, and Charlotte Zhang. The exhibition unfolds across five floors of the museum, incorporating video installations, sculptures, and a historical timeline that foregrounds women's roles in political movements.
